For when a friend disappears
A poem for those living without closure
Recently I had the opportunity to talk about friend breakups and the holidays with Reimagine, and offered this poem at the end of our conversation. (If you attended live or watched the replay, thank you for coming!)
This poem is from my Friend Breakup Survival Guide “How to Live without Closure” and is one of four guides (each with their own poem). You can read more about them here.
So often the ending of a friendship excludes us from answers or resolution. This makes grieving difficult and puts us into a spin cycle of self doubt. If that resonates, I wrote this poem for you.
A Blessing: For when a friend disappears
When the time elapses and the space between you widens
And your heart is marked from stretching to hold the silence
May you love within you what longs for a different ending
And wishes there were words to wrestle with instead of implications
May you let your mind wander and tenderly walk yourself back from the edge
Slowly, your wondering will remember beauty
And your imagination will prompt new ways of belonging
Where conversation is shared and the quiet once again holds the hushed reverence of love
